“Imagine you are a strapping twenty-year-old man in excellent health in southern Italy in 1900. There is no future for you in your village, in any neighboring village, or in southern Italy as a whole. You and all your compadres are peasant farmers and illiterate. You do not have any other job skills. You do not want to leave your native country, your family, and your friends, but you must.”

The North End has always seemed familiar to me, although no one in my family lived there at any time in my life. It is familiar because it was and is the essence of being Italian. The North End has the warm feeling of a protected enclave steeped in culture and history. I have always been aware that beneath that veneer there is more than a century of evolution—hardship, discrimination, persistence, perseverance, connection to the past and pushing into the future. My curiosity about the rich history of this community is what compelled me to spend a year of Saturdays in the North End library searching for answers and writing this book.
I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the journey of researching and writing it. You can pre-order your copy now!
The Role of Women in Legacy and Estate Planning
This week, I did an interview with Jordan Rich on the FFI Practitioner Podcast. We discussed the key takeaways from my recent book, Power, Strength & Perseverance: What women know about other women, but search for in themselves. Listen here for a discussion on my experiences guiding business families and families of wealth through legacy and estate planning.
How does a woman lose her power?
How does a woman lose her power? We will be challenged in life. It is important to keep your power charged and to remember what Virginia Woolf said -every woman needs a room of her own and money of her own (and so should men but that is a different story). It is also important to remember what Anne Morrow Lindbergh said- go find a place externally or internally to reflect. The sea, a quiet room, meditate. The world will dissipate your power if you do not protect it and protecting power must be proactive.
This is some of what I learned when I wrote my new book, Power, Strength & Perseverance: What Women Know About Other Women But Search For In Themselves. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Power is innate for every woman -but does every woman know how to use it?
Power is innate for every woman -but does every woman know how to use it? Harnessing your power something you learn. You first have to understand and accept that you were born powerful and you are powerful. Power is not static. It evolves. Once you claim that power you have to think about how you want to use that power and how you will become more powerful (if you want to become more powerful). Women are powerful in a feminine way, not powerful in a masculine way. There are specific behavioral skills that you can use to be more powerful.
This is some of what I learned when I wrote my new book, Power, Strength & Perseverance: What Women Know About Other Women But Search For In Themselves. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Why don’t women harness their own power?
Why don’t women harness their own power? Fear of understanding what it is, fear of thinking it comes from some external source- looking around at others and mimicking it (the old dress for success). Women have to remember they are innately powerful and are born powerful. No one has to give a woman power; she is born with it. These are some of the thoughts that came to me while writing Power, Strength & Perseverance: What Women Know About Other Women But Search For In Themselves.
What has Feminism accomplished?
Why feminism has served its purpose. Feminism accomplished a great deal. All legal impediments are now gone. The first wave of feminism handled the right of women to vote. The second wave handled divorce and employment laws. We are evolving through the Me2 movement and sexual harassment. It is time for women to find their own power within themselves, own it, and harness it. These are some of the thoughts that came to me when I wrote my new book, Power, Strength & Perseverance: What Women Know About Other Women But Search For In Themselves. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Charm, Beauty and Collaboration
I spent time exploring this question and understanding that there are unique behaviorual skills for women to enhance power- charm, beauty and collaboration.
Jean Jaques Rosseau, the French philosopher, said so eloquently, “Believe me judicious mother, do not make of your daughter a decent man as if to give lie to nature. Make a decent woman of her and you will be sure she will be worth more for herself and for us.”
I agree with that and ponder- what does that mean today? What does it mean to be a woman and be powerful in a feminine way, not a masculine way? In my book, “Power, Strength & Perseverance: What women know about other women, but search for in themselves”, I spent time exploring this question and understanding that there are unique behaviorual skills for women to enhance power- charm, beauty, and collaboration. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Power and Marriage?
power and marriage?
Gloria Steinem is quoted as saying that she did not marry till late in life because of the legal impediments women faced when married. Abigail Adams lived in a time when the legal impediments against marriage were far worse. For example, women could not own land, yet she negotiated land purchases for her husband and he held the title. From all accounts, it appears she accepted the legal impediments and was happily married. Phyllis Schlafly called herself subservient, yet did not use the word “obey” in her wedding vows. Gisele Bunchendon is quoted as saying she banked her money because she expects her husband to support her financially. Barbara Corcoran is quoted as saying that when she out-earned her husband, it made her feel less feminine.
What does all this mean about power and marriage? How is it relevant in a dual career world? These are some of the preliminary questions that prompted me to write my new book, “Power, Strength & Perseverance: What women know about other women, but search for in themselves”. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Feminine or Feminist?
Feminine or feminist? Both beautiful and powerful -in different ways.
Marilyn Monroe and Gloria Steinem are contemporaries- close in age to each. Feminine or feminist? Both beautiful and powerful -in different ways. To me, Marilyn Monroe’s power was through her vulnerability and feminine charm. Gloria Steinem’s power was through her beauty, passion and articulated message. Where is the dividing line between feminine power and feminist power? How much of each are relevant today?
These are some of the preliminary questions that prompted me to write my new book, “Power, Strength & Perseverance: What women know about other women, but search for in themselves”. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Women’s Power
Why is it so many women look outside (not inside) for power?
Why is it so many women look outside (not inside) for power? Did they forget that women are born powerful? Did that forget that the unique power women have is not masculine? Power does not depend on any external force. Understand it. Embrace it. Share it. Once you know that you already have power, you cannot unknow that. The question then becomes what are you going to do with your power? These are the preliminary questions that prompted me to write my new book, “Power, Strength & Perseverance: What women know about other women, but search for in themselves”. I would love to hear your thoughts.
